These beautiful patterns are replicas from the 16th century.  During this time gold leaf blocking on leather and parchment has been practiced in Europe.  Later in the 17th century, this technique was applied to “paper”, which severed as a showcase for European craftsmanship and design exuberance, employing various metalworking tools to cut patterns on thin sheets of copper or brass.  These lovely writing journals are smythe sewn and use acid free paper.
